For many years, I thought that a good pair of jeans were only ‘good’ if they cost over $100. Boy, was I wrong and broke. That’s not to say there are not some quality denim brands out there with fantastic jeans and a hefty price tag. If you love them and are loyal to a brand because they never let you down and you can afford it, then go for it! What I learned in my early 30’s through now, is that you don’t have to break the bank to find a great pair of jeans. I also learned that you don’t have to follow every jean trend just because its popular. It may work for you and it may not. You have to find a style and a fit that compliments your body type, height, shape, etc. I learned that too. I learned that I love a high-waisted fit. I love skinny jeans. Period. Yes, will I occasionally venture into wide leg territory, but my go-to is a hi-waisted skinny or a mom jean skinny.
There was a time when it was all Seven For All Mankind jeans for me. Throwing down $150+ for a pair of jeans was a no brainer. Then I realized that they stretched too much for my taste and I was left with a bunch of expensive jeans that I couldn’t wear. Then a pair of jeans from Uniqlo changed all that for me. I walked in to the store downtown, and decided to try on a pair of their skinny jeans. They were $50 and from that day forward I never bought a pair of jeans that cost me more than $50. I loved them so much I bought the same style in two washes. I went from the girl with 12 pairs of jeans in her closet, to a max of 3-4 jeans. To this day, I have about six jeans in different washes and fit but all in all, they are all pretty much high-waisted, mom cut, skinny.
I recently did a Style Challenge with Miami-based styled, Styld by Sophie, on styling a pair of denim jeans from Target. By the way, if you’re not following this fun Brit, make sure you do- she’s got great style! Funny enough, considering how much time (and money) I spend at Target, I’ve never actually purchased a pair of jeans from there and I’ve definitely seen some cute denim in several of their in-house collections. I knew I wanted a pair of black jeans, and something high-waisted. Then I saw these fun ones from the Who What Wear collection and thought, ‘ Let’s play with these!’ Yes, they’re retro. Yes, they’re a little bit 90’s, even 80’s with the subtle acid wash. I loved them. Best part? They were $34.
Ok, so they are not skinny, but they are high-waisted, and that’s more important to me. These are cut at the ankles which I love because I like how they look with flats and booties. Personally, I would wear this kind of cut with a heel, because otherwise, they may come off a little dumpy looking if you don’t. Next up, styling these babies!
When I teamed up with Sophie, we each come up with a few different ways to style our Target jeans. She was playing with a classic blue wash in a paper bag style. We ultimately narrowed it down with one look to post on the feed, and when we did our style challenge, which you can watch here, we showed viewers other ways you can rock the denim. It was also fun to see how she infused Miami fashion when she styled hers, and I infused some NY street style into mine.
But first, let’s talk about how I styled my black denim in my latest post! I could pull off this look here in New York, because we’re transitioning from winter into spring so the weather tends to fluctuate but I still wanted to include a pop of color into the look to play off with the black. I found this insanely extra poplin top at Zara and fell in love! The bow, the color, everything about it is big and bold and I love how it looks tucked into the jeans. Because it’s chilly, I added a houndstooth blazer that belonged to my mom. If I was in Miami, I would pair with a white blazer, but I love being able to incorporate pieces that belonged to my mom into my wardrobe and since the weather called for it, I brought it out! Now its time for shoes. I LOVE white boots. I own three different types of white boots. One of them, I wore so much I damaged the heel, so I got a new pair at Shein for $28, and these are them! I love incorporating white booties to every outfit right now- dresses, jeans, joggers. It’s an easy way to spruce up any look and they look great with these black jeans!
The Kat in the Hat, as my friends jokingly refer to me, needs her hat. For me, a black fedora is a staple and I’ve been wearing the heck out of this Goorin Bros one since the fall. If hats aren’t a staple for you and you don’t want to splurge, there are some great options at stores like H&M, Forever 21, and Burlington!
Now that you’ve seen how I’ve decoded my denim and styled these affordable pair from Target, are you more inclined to find cheaper jeans to add to your wardrobe? I want to see how you style yours! Tag me.
